Online calculator helping beef farmers

A new online tool is helping cattle farmers in NSW and Victoria save thousands of dollars a year.

The BeefSpecs calculator was developed for Meat and Livestock Australia by the Beef CRC and Industry and Investment NSW.

Its purpose is to help producers better manage the growth path of beef cattle to meet market specifications.

Bill McKiernan, from I and I NSW, says the tool has already been put to the test by about 30 farmers.

"What we'd found in some of our earlier studies is that about 30 per cent of animals fall outside of market grids and specifications," he says.

"That can cost farmers between $100 and $200 a head, depending on the size of the animal and where it does and doesn't meet specifications."

It's hoped that by the end of this year the calculator will be capable of predicting meat yield in the boning room.

The tool is available on MLA's website.
