Cyclone delays live cattle exports

As Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi approaches the north Queensland coast, a live exporting company has decided not to evacuate 3000 head of cattle from Townsville.

Austrex was due to send a boat to Indonesia tomorrow, but due to the weather, it won't leave the Port of Townsville.

Cameron Hall, chief executive of industry body LiveCorp, says there weren't enough trucks available to move the stock.

"The animals will be staying on the site where they are. It's a good site. It's located on the side of a hill with good drainage, and the facility itself is a very strong structure," he said.

"We think that the best way to ensure the safety of the animals is to keep them where they are."
